Course Overview

The Automobile Service Technician is a 6-month diploma programme designed to equip learners with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies required to inspect, service, maintain, diagnose, and repair modern automobiles. The programme integrates mechanical engineering principles, automotive electrical and electronic systems, computerised diagnostics, and emerging vehicle technologies with extensive hands-on workshop training and supervised industry placement.

The curriculum follows a competency-based learning approach delivered through four progressive phases. Learners begin with workplace safety, workshop practices, engineering fundamentals, and vehicle construction before advancing to mechanical systems servicing, automotive electrical and electronic diagnostics, digital diagnostic technologies, and structured work-based learning. Approximately 600 training hours combine classroom instruction, laboratory sessions, practical workshop activities, simulated commercial workshop environments, and supervised industry placement to ensure learners develop occupational competence aligned with current automotive service industry standards.

Throughout the programme, learners gain practical experience in servicing engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, braking systems, fuel and emissions systems, air-conditioning, and vehicle electrical systems. They also develop competency in using modern diagnostic equipment, including OBD-II scanners, manufacturer-specific diagnostic platforms, multimeters, and digital workshop management systems to identify faults, interpret Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), analyse live vehicle data, and perform systematic repairs. The programme also introduces hybrid and electric vehicle (HEV/EV) technologies, high-voltage safety, and digital service documentation to prepare learners for evolving automotive technologies.

A significant component of the programme is the 300-hour supervised industry placement, where learners apply their classroom knowledge in live dealership, fleet maintenance, or commercial workshop environments under the guidance of experienced technicians. Through practical assessments, competency logbooks, workplace observations, and professional evaluations, learners develop the technical proficiency, problem-solving ability, customer service skills, and professional behaviours required for successful employment. Upon successful completion, graduates are prepared for entry-level careers as Automobile Service Technicians, Auto Electricians, Diagnostic Technicians, Engine Repair Technicians, or to progress into service advisory and other automotive service roles.
